MARC CAPPELLETTI
I have spent my career helping people see the wonder in the world around them. From my start as a small ship cruise director, to marketing international internships, to crafting and managing expeditions throughout Alaska, British Columbia and Central America for Lindblad Expeditions and National Geographic. I’ve learned a lot from these roles, and I am passionate about creating and marketing products and/or experiences that help others explore a new part of their world—near or far.
“Where are my eyes?” Vince calls out to our quad scull.
It’s 7:00am on a chilly, gray, Sunday morning in early November. The Schuylkill River is calm. I am not. Neither is Vince, the other first-timer in the boat. He twists in his seat as veteran rowers Bill and Gary steer us clear of the docks at Boathouse Row. Like Vince, the awkwardness of blindly moving backwards is hitting me, but I don’t have to ask where to look.
The follow is an excerpt from my memoir, Will My Cane Float? (Voyages into Adulthood and the Adventurous Retirees Who Showed Me the Way).
...From the bow of the Yorktown Clipper, I looked out on Juneau and watched as bald eagles soared high above the Sitka spruce and hemlocks.
The following is an excerpt from my soon-to-be finished story about my year as a small ship cruise director traveling with and learning from my retired passengers.
...The idea of “so what” appeared again the following week in Belize, as Mr. Gallagher danced with his wife to the sounds of a Garifuna band on deck. Every beat of the Garifuna drum tells the story
After reading my 6 Ways to Find Happiness on the Horizon download, a friend from way back contacted me about her experience with the power of travel. She practices as a physician assistant in orthopedic surgery in Oregon and her story fascinated me.
I have read two books more than once—Journey to the Center of the Earth by Jules Verne and a double feature of The Call of the Wild and White Fang by Jack London. Both take me to incredible places. Both make me dream. For this, my sixth trip to Haida Gwaii, an archipelago some 30 miles west of British Columbia, I packed the Jack London. It seemed fitting for the long flights across Canada.
What started four years ago as no more than map dots and curiosity has turned into a personal and professional journey. It’s taken me into the woods where black bears roam,
There’s the blogger girl, the travel hack genius and the wandering nomad whose life you really want, the couple who sells everything and hits the road, the fearless adventurer, and the people who know exactly what to order at that amazing restaurant in Marrakesh.
I love these people. They inspire me. But I'm not them.
US National Parks received 330 million visitors in 2017. From Alaska’s Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve to Acadia National Park in Maine, people chose to spend their time in natural American beauty. In doing so, they not only fed their souls, they contributed to American enterprise in a way that few if any other entities do (and which I’ll explain below). The President, the Secretary of the Interior and his department have the responsibility and privilege of managing that unique resource. According to the National Parks System Advisory Board, they haven’t.
32 gorgeous images from Alaska, British Columbia and Haida Gwaii, and a poem proven to inspire.
99% of rewarding journeys stop before they even start. This is my promise to help you to take the first step.

What does travel mean to you? What does it mean to travel bloggers, National Geographic researchers and photographers think about travel?

A person you met, a fear you overcame, finding empathy, stories of gratitude and connection. I'd love to hear them. And, most importantly, to know how the experiences have shaped the person you are today.
